Internet Research Ethics

The Center for Information Policy Research has long been at the center of investigating and understanding the complexities of Internet research ethics, the analysis of ethical issues and application of research ethics principles as they pertain to research conducted on and in the Internet.

Led by former director Dr. Elizabeth Buchanan, CIPR hosted the Internet Research Ethics Digital Library, Research Center, and Commons, an NSF-funded project providing access to a large collection of scholarly articles dealing with Internet research ethics, and expert advice as more researchers and more IRBs/ethics boards struggle with the complexities of Internet-based research.

CIPR director Michael Zimmer has provided expert advice to numerous university IRBs, lead student workshops on Internet research ethics, and consults on various research projects on related issues. Zimmer currently co-chairs the Ethics Working Committee of the Association of Internet Researchers. With Dr. Katharina Kinder-Kurlanda, Zimmer is co-editing “Internet Research Ethics for the Social Age: New Cases and Challenges”, due to be released in 2017.
